How to be funny

November 21st, 2007 by admin

My stand-up comedy debut was still five days away, and already I was envisioning “bombing,” as they say in the business.

When I’d signed up for a comedy class a few months earlier to learn how to be funny, I wasn’t trying to land my own sitcom or an appearance on David Letterman’s show. I was more interested in answering the question many people bring to a course like this: If I can make my friends and family laugh, does that really make me funny?

Actually, there are plenty of other reasons to take an adult-ed course in stand-up – to learn how to tell jokes well, to write with more zip, or even to be a better public speaker.

But that’s not enough to make the class appealing to everyone. Tell people you are trying stand-up comedy and they say things like, “I could never do that,” “It sounds like torture,” and my personal favorite: “I would rather bungee jump.”

That didn’t keep me and my 12 classmates from exploring the world of comedy each week with a funnyman named Steve Calechman. He’s been doing stand-up in the Boston area for a decade, more recently teaching his craft to wannabes who’ve decided to see if they have what it takes.

What he knows, we learned: It takes a lot of work to make what comedians do look spontaneous. Thus started my quest to learn to be funny and witty.

Throughout the six-week class, we were guided by an observation he made early on about the difference between an amateur and a professional: One makes you think, “Yeah, that’s right”; the other, “Hey, I never thought of it that way.”

Focus on physique - Fun way to get fit and lose those kilos

If you’re like me and you have trouble sticking to an exercise (or diet) routine, then read on. I have found a great personal trainer – John Ghastine, who runs Focus on Physique in Rosanna www.focusonphysique.com.au . Being one of those people that doesn’t enjoy traditional exercise, I struggle to keep active and do regular exercise. I have tried joining gyms, going to classes and walking with friends but I just get bored so quickly which of course means I lose motivation. However, a friend told me about Focus on Physique – she’d been doing two one hour personal training sessions per week for a couple of months and she seemed so invigorated and clearly enjoyed it, so I decided to give it a go. It was the best thing I ever did. During the first session (which is longer), they will put you through a fitness test and talk to you about your goals, so the program will be completely tailored to your personal needs. There are several trainers at Focus on Physique and they’re all really cool people who are good at pushing you, but also know how to have a bit of fun. They’ll provide guidance on diet and overall lifestyle, and keep a weekly log to keep track of your progress. If you’re looking to get fit or lose weight, these guys can definitely help, because they’re realistic and they don’t throw extreme diets and exercise requirements at you – they’ll work out your personal style and work with it. They also do weekly Boot Camps , pre and post pregnancy fitness and can work with you on specific sports training. Each session we mix it up. If the weather’s good, I prefer to be outdoors, so we’ll go running in one of the many parks around the Focus on Physique studio. Other weeks I might feel like doing low-impact work indoors. The great thing is, Focus on Physique understand the importance of variety – both for weight loss results and motivation. Plus, their pricing is really reasonable.

So, if you’re wanting to shape up for summer, I would say personal training is the way to go and would highly recommend Focus on Physique.
